What Size Airstream Should I Rent? Every Floor Plan in Our Fleet

The most common question we get before a first booking is what size Airstream to rent. Our fleet runs from 16 to 30 feet and sleeps four to eight, and the right answer depends on three things: how many people are sleeping in it, how long you are staying, and what is pulling it. Here is how we size renters at our Lathrop lot, floor plan by floor plan.

The short answer

A couple is comfortable in a 16 to 23 foot trailer. A family of four wants 25 feet or more. A large family or a group that wants one trailer should look at the 30-foot Flying Cloud Bunk, which sleeps eight with a queen bed, a full bed and a bunk. If you are still not sure, call us. Sizing renters correctly is what our shop manager, Jose, is best known for, and at pickup he will show you the next size up so you can see the difference for yourself.

Small trailers: 16 to 22 feet

These are the easiest Airstreams to tow, park and back into a tight campsite, and they are where most first-time renters start.

  • Sport, 16 feet, sleeps 4. Our smallest and least expensive trailer. Ideal for two people and a weekend.
  • Caravel, 19 feet, sleeps 4. A full Airstream interior in a short length, good for couples who want a little more room than the Sport.
  • Base Camp, 20 feet, sleeps 4. Airstream’s compact adventure trailer, pictured below.
  • Flying Cloud, 20 feet, sleeps 4. The classic Airstream layout in its most compact version.
  • Bambi, 22 feet, sleeps 4. The Bambi is Airstream’s best-known small trailer, with a little more living space than the 20-footers.

On the 22-foot trailers and smaller, a one-night rental works, because they turn around faster between renters.

Mid-size trailers: 23 to 25 feet

This is the sweet spot for two adults on a longer trip, or a small family.

  • Flying Cloud, 23 feet, sleeps 5. Room for a couple plus a child or two.
  • Globetrotter, 23 feet, sleeps 4. A different interior style from the Flying Cloud at the same length.
  • International and International Signature, 25 feet, sleeps 6. We run several of these, so two families traveling together can book matching trailers.
  • Flying Cloud, 25 feet, sleeps 6. The family-trip workhorse of the fleet.

Large trailers: 27 to 30 feet

For families of four or more, longer stays, or anyone who wants real elbow room inside.

  • Globetrotter, 27 feet, sleeps 6.
  • International, 28 feet, sleeps 6.
  • Pottery Barn edition, 28 feet, sleeps 6. The special edition designed with Pottery Barn interiors.
  • Flying Cloud Bunk, 30 feet, sleeps 8. Our largest trailer, with a queen bed, a full bed and a bunk.

Nightly rates across the fleet run $179 to $390 depending on the trailer and the season. The live rate for your dates is on our rentals page.

What can your vehicle tow?

Size is often decided by the tow vehicle, not the headcount. The rule we use is to stay within 80% of your vehicle’s maximum towing capacity, so a truck or SUV rated for 10,000 pounds tows a trailer up to 8,000 pounds. You will also need a brake controller and a 7-pin connector. Tow-vehicle requirements are listed on each trailer on our rentals page, and we will test your brake controller and connector at the lot for free one to two weeks before your trip.

If your vehicle cannot tow the trailer you want, you have two options: rent one of our trucks alongside it, or have us deliver the trailer. Here is how renting without a truck works.

Thinking about buying one?

Rent the size you are considering first. A weekend in a 23-footer tells you more than an hour on a dealer lot, and Airstream dealers send shoppers to us for exactly that reason.
