No Truck? How to Rent an Airstream Without a Tow Vehicle

Plenty of people want an Airstream trip and do not own anything that can pull one. That is not the end of the conversation. At GoSilver there are three ways to rent an Airstream, and only one of them needs your own tow vehicle.

Option 1: We deliver it to your campsite

Delivery is the most popular option for renters who do not own a tow vehicle, or who simply want the trip to start when they arrive. We tow the trailer to your campsite, your driveway, your venue or your event, level it, hook it up, walk you through it, and pick it up when you are done.

There is no delivery radius. If you can camp there, we can bring the trailer to you, and we can deliver several trailers to the same place when a group needs them. Delivery is quoted per trip, based on mileage, time and location. The runs we make most are Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, the Sierra foothills, the coast from Santa Cruz to Big Sur, and Bay Area driveways for holiday guests.

Delivery works especially well at campgrounds where the trailer stays put for the whole stay, like the Santa Cruz Monterey Bay KOA and Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort.

Option 2: Rent our truck with the trailer

We keep two trucks for exactly this: a 2024 Ford F-250 Super Duty and a 2023 Ford F-150, each at $160 a night, rented alongside a trailer. You get a tow vehicle that is already set up for our Airstreams, with no guesswork about ratings, brake controllers or connectors.

Do you need a special license? No. A standard California driver’s license covers trailers up to 10,000 pounds, and every Airstream in our fleet is under that. Most of our renters have never towed before. At pickup we walk you through hitching, unhitching, setup and every system in the trailer, and if a question comes up on the road, help is a phone call away, 24 hours a day.

Option 3: Check whether your own vehicle can tow

You may own a capable tow vehicle without knowing it. Your vehicle needs to be rated for the trailer’s weight, with an electronic brake controller and a standard 7-pin round connector. The rule we use is to stay within 80% of the vehicle’s maximum towing capacity, so a vehicle rated for 10,000 pounds tows a trailer up to 8,000 pounds.

Not sure? Stop by our Lathrop lot one to two weeks before your trip and we will test your brake controller and connector at no charge. If your vehicle has no brake controller, portable controllers are available to rent. The smaller trailers, like the 16-foot Sport and the 20-foot Base Camp, are the easiest match for an SUV. Our size guide lists every floor plan in the fleet.

Which option should you choose?

  • Staying in one campground the whole trip: delivery. You drive your own car, and the trailer is level and hooked up when you arrive.
  • Moving between campgrounds: rent our truck, or bring your own if it passes the check.
  • A first trip and nervous about towing: delivery, then try towing next time once you have seen how the trailer works.
